As the International Energy Agency (IEA) is co-hosting an International Summit on the Future of Energy Security in London, along with the UK government, the Climate Action Network (CAN) Africa underscores the urgency of redefining energy security through the lens of climate justice, equity, and a just transition to renewable energy across the African continent.
Historically excluded from global energy decisions yet deeply impacted by climate change, energy poverty, and debt crisis, Africa cannot be sidelined in shaping the future. Energy security for the continent must reflect the realities of its people, not as a question of fossil fuel stability, but as one of rights, access, and resilience.
Africa holds immense renewable energy potential, from solar and wind to geothermal and hydro. These resources are key to strengthening public services, powering local economies, and building resilience to climate shocks. Yet access remains among the lowest in the world, with millions still living without electricity. This disconnect must be addressed by placing Africa’s needs and priorities at the center of global energy conversations.
Through its ongoing campaign “100% RE For Africa Now”, CAN Africa is advancing a bold vision: renewable energy must serve as a cornerstone for both resilience and economic transformation. Our demands are clear, Africa must not be a testing ground for outdated fossil fuel strategies, but a leader in shaping modern, decentralized, and clean energy systems that reflect the continent’s development and resilience goals.
“The future of energy security will depend on whether global frameworks are responsive to Africa’s realities, whether finance reaches the frontlines, and whether African voices are heard and heeded, not just as participants, but as architects of a shared, sustainable future.” – Dr. Wafa Misrar, Campaigns and Policy Lead at Climate Action Network Africa.
