JUST ENERGY TRANSITION

Preventing proliferation of fossil fuels through promotion of the use of renewable energy and sustainable energy for all.

In the Fulani village of Hore Mondji, located in southern Mauritania on the banks of the Senegal River, a women's cooperative uses solar energy to operate the borehole that supplies water to the market garden. A project piloted by UNICEF in partnership with local authorities. In a country heavily impacted by drought and welding periods, solar energy represents an inexhaustible source of energy for the production of fruits, vegetables and aromatic plants (such as okra, carrots, mint, peppers, eggplants or tomatoes) for local consumption as well as for sale in the markets of neighboring towns. The women of the cooperative thus have a regular income as well as a rich variety of fruits and vegetables that promote dietary diversification and the well-being of their children.
Making renewable energy acessable for local communities enable new livliehood activties and can be key to built climate reslience. This woman mantains a solar panel that power the water pump which secure water supply for her farm. This ensures food security and helps coping with climate-change-induced drought conditions.

JUST DO IT

Just Transition requieres a fast phase-out of fossil fuels along side a phase-in of renewable energies. We advocate for fair sharing of cost, burdens and benifits. Transitions processes and policies has to be design in a way that empower most vulnerable groups (youth, women, indigenous, smallholders etc.).

ENDING FOSSIL FUELS

ENTER A RENEWABLE FUTURE

The fossil fuel lobby continues to block progress on stopping the climate emergency. CAN Africa is commited to stripping fossil fuel companies of their social and economic license. CAN Africa supports a just transition away from fossil fuels.

According to leading climate scientist, the IPCC and the International Energy Agency (IEA) we have to stop new oil and gas exploration to stay within a carbon budget for 1,5 °C. The IEA showcases in their NetZero by  2050 roadmap that “No new oil and natural gas fields are needed in our pathway“ .

Renewable Energies (RE) are a cornerstone for mitigation of climate change. Beyond the productive use of renewabable energies empower local communties, create new livlihood oppertunities and can therefore support a sustainable development and enhance local climate reslience. Fast-tracking a just energy transition to 100 % Renewable Energy is key for a sustainable development aligned with urgent climate action. To leave noone behind the transition has to be sensitive to most vulnerable groups as youth, woman and smallholders and ensure that they are involved. Advocating for just transition processes gurantee that every member of the community benifit as well that burden and cost are shared equally and fair.
