Climate Action Network Nodes within Africa have agreed to establish the African regional node for joint coordination and strengthen advocacy for enhanced climate actions and building climate resilience. CAN Africa will assert African leadership and strengthen bottom-up and people-driven work across the continent to catalyze transformational change and build power through movements in Africa and globally. CAN Africa wants to significantly contribute to a strong and well-coordinated African civil society that can impactfully push for regional demands. Under the guidance of the CAN Africa Board, the Node Coordinator will be the person chiefly responsible for coordinating the shared space, driving movement collaboration, and growing the CAN Africa’s reach over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on strategic development and implementation CAN Africa network
  • Lead and coordinate in conceptualizing and implementing programs and projects
  • Lead on resource mobilization efforts and sustainability of the network through relationship building with donors, proposal writing and reporting writing of CAN Africa work
  • Lead movement building for the CAN Africa through outreach to new organizations
  • Distill lessons and learnings from CAN Africa projects and programs to inform organizational objectives and outcomes, including reporting back to the CAN Africa Board (through chair or to whole)
  • Communicate with CAN Africa members regularly to share information, send meeting notices, gather feedback, and generate interest
  • Track participation and identify opportunities to increase participation as needed
  • Maintain record of work of steering committee and broader CAN Africa working groups
  • Work across various CAN Africa projects and programs as a team member or lead, as required by the CAN Africa Board
  • Liaise with the CAN Africa Board of other participants who are reflective of CAN Africa work in line with CAN Africa purpose
  • Facilitate appropriate and effective planning, decision-making, communication, and problem solving within the CAN Africa steering committee
  • Coordinate with CAN Africa members and beyond to deliver the intended regional goals and objectives
  • Promote and disseminate information about the CAN Africa to increase visibility and participation
  • Provide facilitation, research, and technical skills as necessary for the implementation of the project and programs
  • Represent the CAN Africa in key meetings, fora, events as appropriate, relevant and at the request of the Board 
  • Responsible for all coordination of CAN Africa meetings including agenda development, note taking, synthesis of next steps, and development of resulting project schedules and work plans

Management

  • Collaborate with and support CAN Africa to foster the identification and operationalization of opportunities to strengthen CAN Africa’s role in and contributions to movement building and sustained organizing on the African continent.
  • Lead and coordinate efforts to define fundraising priorities and resource mobilization, develop funding proposals and grant reporting. 
  • Assess potential risks and issues that arise that could affect the delivery of the movement work and propose mitigating measures as appropriate. 
  • Lead planning, reporting, knowledge-management and monitoring, evaluation and learning efforts of the movement program, in particular networks, campaigns and civil society support.
  • Help to develop and provide the CAN Africa with the tools and resources needed in the effective implementation of the objectives of this secondment.
  • Lead the management of teams working towards the defined objectives as appropriate

Convenings

  • Lead on finding resources needed to support network convenings.
  • Provide guidance on how such convenings are accessible, connected, and facilitate collaboration, in order to develop co-created spaces with partners and stakeholders that center equity and the most impacted communities. 
  • Support and facilitate the collaborative design of priorities and activities within networks, including defining clear objectives, desired outcomes and outputs to deliver impact. 

Partnerships

  • Support efforts to deepen partnership, alignment, and engagement with civil society and networks in the region and beyond. In doing so, ensure CAN Africa’s strategic integration in the Pan African civil society landscape, and within that the COP27 Coalition specifically (but not exclusively); 
  • Assess the influences, interests and attitudes of the key stakeholders and advise how to best align strategies and coordinate tactics where appropriate. 
  • Support proactive stakeholder engagement, regular feedback and identifying any barriers/potential conflicts with the aim to work through them in a genuine spirit of collaboration.
  • Ensure that all parties stay informed about the ongoing work as relevant to them. 
  • Ensure smooth and effective knowledge and information transfer between all parties. 
  • Facilitate the consultation of the different parties as needed and where relevant on the work at hand, including organizing exchanges between the parties involved where needed.

Resource Mobilisation

  • Lead on donor mapping and building partnership with donors to support the work of CAN Africa
  • Lead writing concept notes and proposal for donors where needed 
  • Represent CAN Africa in donor meeting and present the work of CAN Africa to donors 
  • Lead on report of CAN Africa work to donor and ensure the network is donor compliant

Experience:

Minimum high/management level 5 years’ experience working with regional groups of civil society organizations, media and social movements. Experience and skills on climate change, energy, and development issues are highly valued. Additional years of work experience and relevant degrees highly valued.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required by position:

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have deep knowledge and experience of issues relating to African climate change, energy, and development
  • Have experience and influence to working with frontline movements, civil society and media groups, and broader networks of organizations
  • Have exceptional written and verbal communication, able to synthesize big picture ideas into sharp policy briefs (multiple regional languages highly valued)
  • Be highly organized, with exceptional time management, project planning, and note taking (able to seamlessly stay on top of meetings and coordination across dozens of partner organizations and hundreds of members).
  • Be a people-person with strong relationship building and relationship management skills with strong conflict resolution and negotiations skills
  • Must have ability to work remotely, independently, and in a team setting, establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others within the CAN Africa membership and steering committee by developing collaborative partnerships, facilitating meetings and maintaining confidentiality, reading, interpreting, and compiling data

This is a 80%-time role and will receive a competitive compensation package, commensurate with experience and location. The role will be remote with expectation to travel up to two months of the year. The hiring committee highly values diversity and encourages candidates of all identities, backgrounds, and abilities.
