CAN Africa attended the groundbreaking 2024 UN Civil Society Conference (UNCSC) held at the United Nations Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. This was the first time the conference was being hosted in Africa, with over 2,000 activists from across the globe gathering in preparation for the upcoming Summit of the Future.
Our regional coordinator, Baboucarr Nyang, along with our Communications and Digital Communications Officer, Philipine Tlou Mpai, were honoured to represent CAN Africa at this historic event.

Key Takeaways from “Co-Creating the Future: Children’s Experiences Toward a Greener, Fairer, and Happier World”
CAN Africa attended a thought-provoking discussion on the role of children in shaping a sustainable future. Here are some of the key takeaways:
- “We are not children; we are leaders of the country.”
- “Let’s unite in the fight against climate change.”
- “Investing in children today shapes the future.”
- “Actions, not just strategies, are what we need from governments.”
- “Children deserve to be seen, heard, and actively involved.”
These insights underscore the importance of empowering children and amplifying their voices in the fight for climate justice. CAN Africa is committed to heeding the call and taking decisive actions toward a brighter, more equitable future for all.
Commitment to Climate Justice at the Summit of the Future
As we approach the Summit of the Future, CAN Africa has pledged our unwavering commitment to Climate Justice. We engaged with representatives from various generations at the UNCSC, discussing recommendations for the Pact for the Future and ensuring that Climate Justice remains a central theme.
The importance of civil society and multigenerational participation has never been more evident and together, let’s strive for a sustainable future where no one is left behind.
Advocating for Peace and Justice
At the UNCSC, CAN Africa joined forces with hundreds of activists in Nairobi, Kenya, advocating for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the genocide in Gaza. Our Regional Node Coordinator, Baboucarr Nyang, had a face-to-face interaction with Refat Sabbah, President of the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), in support of these critical efforts.
CAN Africa remains steadfast in our commitment to peace, justice, and human rights for all. We will continue to amplify these voices and work tirelessly towards a more just and equitable world.
Conclusion
As we concluded our participation in the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference, we reflected on the powerful connections made and the inspiring dialogues that took place. The event not only highlighted the urgent need for climate justice and the empowerment of future generations but also reinforced our commitment to advocating for a sustainable and equitable world. Let us move forward with determination and hope, knowing that together, we can make a lasting impact.
